Time to upgrade my computer?

Dated: 2nd December 2017

I have recently been trying out new video editing software and whilst I can run DaVinci 12.5 perfectly without a dedicated graphics card, the latest DaVinci Resolve 14 will not run [well the Beta would not anyway].   It requires a dedicated card, although all my other software is happy to run on the on-board graphics chip.

Latest...
I have now installed and updated to the latest DaVinci V14 full release but am still having issues with this version build.  At least it  will actually playback something.  However, it will not display dissolves or text overlays for my existing files and stutters regularly.

I have read online that dedicated graphics cards are now not required with this full release but that is not working for me. I know that just relying on the on-board graphics of my motherboard is not ideal, but the motherboard graphics processor works for every other software program I am using and I am not going to spend £200 plus to just be able to run some software that does not really give any material advantage in output. V14 does have great new features but I will wait for the moment.

Moving to V14 involved upgrading the associated database files to a different format, but as advised I backed up the old files.  Lets hope I can revert to 12.5 without too much work.   I managed it before when I reverted from  V14 Beta.   We will see...

My current work computer setup is as follows...

This build is between 18-months to 24-months old now.  A bit of a mixture in some of the parts.
I often use CoolerMaster hardware for work PC builds, they make great looking cases and cooling components.  I have several similar builds and they are completely silent, certainly in most work environments.    Another work PC is running with the SKYlake i7-6700K processor, same motherboard and config as this unit shown here.

Rather than using local or networked hard-drive arrays as in the past, I now mostly store my data files in the Cloud.  Its cheaper and so far I find it much simpler.  I have several laptops and work PCs [plus my first Apple Mac box, much to the delight of my MAC obsessive colleagues,  just installed at a client site], all these at various sites around the country and being able to access Cloud data makes sense.

Talking of APPLE MAC hardware and networking, I am drifting in that direction as I do find my Office 365 setups can lose connectivity and their desktop client apps are rubbish at times.

My Office PC running Windows 10 professional

ASUS Extreme Z170 Extreme4 motherboard, i5-600 SKYLake processor, DDR-4 16GB RAM and 256 Samsung 850-Pro SSD [only for the OS itself].   Also WD and Samsung HD drives being used but not shown in these pictures.

The inside of the case..

You can see the CoolerMaster Neptune 240M watercooling tubes feeding the roof mounted unit, the 850P2 power supply and the CM690 III case.    I do like CoolerMaster kit!

So lots of space to add a dedicated Graphics card.  But not for now.
